Joey Bada$$ Headlines SPA’s Eighth Annual Block Party

The Student Programming Association (SPA) announced that Joey Bada$$ will headline the eighth annual Nittany Block Party on the Friday of Syllabus week.

The rapper will put on a free performance on the HUB Lawn August 24 at 8:30 p.m. Student performers kick off the show at 6 p.m. The show will go on rain or shine, with the HUB’s Alumni Hall ready for use as a backup location in case of inclement weather.

After delaying the announcement Monday due to “circumstances out of [its] control,” SPA named its artist a day later for the event, which will be held in a new location after previously taking place on Pollock Road.

Joey Bada$$ came on to the scene as BET’s “Best New Artist” in 2013 after releasing his mixtapes, 1999 and Summer Knights. He has since released two albums — B4.Da.$$ and ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$ — that both peaked at No. 5 in the Billboard Hot 200.

The “DEVASTATED” artist keeps up with the trend of Hip-Hop acts opening the year for SPA — following Dej Loaf in 2016 and Kyle in 2017. Other performers that have headlined Nittany Block Party include Matt Nathanson (2011), The Ready Set (2012), Eric Hutchinson (2013), Thompson Square (2014), and The Chainsmokers (2015).

Unfortunately, former editor Steve Connelly has graduated. Where is he now? He might be doing something related to that PR degree he got in 2019. Maybe he finally opened that sports bar named after one of his photos, the Blurry Zamboni. Or he might just be eating chicken tenders and couch surfing. Anything’s possible.
