Nittany Lions In The NFL: Week Seven Roundup
Many Nittany Lions have cemented their spots on professional rosters through the first seven weeks of the NFL season. Let’s check in on how they performed this week.
Saquon Barkley, New York Giants
Saquon Barkley finished just six yards short of his seventh consecutive game with 100+ total yards in a 23-20 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. No. 26 did most of his damage through the air with nine receptions for 51 yards, but did have a rushing score from two yards out in the fourth quarter.
The offensive line was once again the downfall for New York, with Barkley unable to find much room on the ground against Atlanta’s defense. He remains one of the lone bright spots on an otherwise inconsistent team. The Giants fell to 1-6 in a year that had so much promise from the start. Barkley and his teammates will take on the Washington Redskins for a divisional clash next Sunday.
Mike Gesicki, Miami Dolphins
Mike Gesicki pulled down three catches for 44 yards on Sunday in a 32-21 loss to the Detroit Lions. The second round pick had his highest yardage total of the season with only three targets. Head coach Adam Gase has been using the rookie more and more each week, as the Dolphins are in desperate need of offensive playmakers. Miami will travel to Houston next weekend for a primetime Sunday Night Football showdown.
Chris Godwin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Chris Godwin snagged five receptions for 59 yards in a 26-23 overtime win against the Cleveland Browns. This breaks Tampa Bay’s three-game losing streak and improves its record to 3-3 this season. Godwin has arguably been the second-most consistent wide receiver on the team this year behind Mike Evans. However, the emergence of tight end O.J. Howard may lead to a decrease in targets going forward. Godwin will continue to be a threat to score next week when Tampa Bay heads to Cincinnati, which is fresh off a blowout loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Allen Robinson, Chicago Bears
Allen Robinson was somehow held in check against New England, even though the Bears’ offense put up 31 points. He finished with one reception for four yards, a disappointment for fantasy owners of the Penn State product. Robinson was once thought to be the No. 1 option for Mitch Trubisky, but he’s been outperformed by many of his teammates this season.
Chicago finished the game just a yard away from forcing overtime against the Patriots. The Bears will try to get back to their winning ways next week against the New York Jets.
Other Notables
Trevor Williams had one tackle in a 20-19 win over the Tennessee Titans in London. The Chargers are now 5-2, with the Chiefs standing as their main competition in the division. Adrian Amos had four tackles and a pass deflection for the Bears’ struggling defense.
