Department Of Animal Science To Hold 17th Annual Quarter Horse Sale

The 17th annual Quarter Horse Sale at Penn State will take place Saturday, April 27 at the Snider Agricultural Arena on East Park Ave.

Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. on the day of the sale and the sale horse demonstrations will start at 10 a.m. Students in Animal Science 117 (Penn State’s equine marketing class) are training more than a dozen horses to prepare them for the sale.

Those who attend can get tours of the barn beginning at noon. The horse auction itself, however, starts at 2 p.m. If you can’t make it to the Snider Agricultural Arena, the sale will also be streamed live on the Quarter Horse Sale’s YouTube channel.

Most of the horses in the sale are “green,” which is a fancy way of saying they’re untrained. However, students in the equine marketing class are riding and lunging — i.e. having a horse run around a trainer in a circle — the horses as part of their preparation for the sale.

Here’s a look a just a few of the horses that’ll be on display:

In addition to the Quarter Horse Sale, the club English and Western Equestrian teams and Collegiate Horseman’s Association at Penn State (CHAPS) are also part of Penn State’s equine science program.
