Sean Clifford Named To 2020 Manning Award Preseason Watch List
Penn State football quarterback Sean Clifford landed on the Manning Award preseason watch list Thursday.
The honor annually recognizes college football’s best quarterback. Named after Archie, Peyton, and Eli Manning, the award is only trophy that takes bowl performances into account.
Clifford is coming off a solid first season at the helm of Penn State’s offense in which he led the Nittany Lions to an 11-2 record and a Cotton Bowl victory. He threw for 23 touchdowns, added five on the ground, and gained more than 2,600 yards in the air with a 59.2% completion percentage.
The Manning Award’s recipient is selected once bowl games wrap up by a panel of national media members and each of the Mannings. LSU’s Joe Burrow received the honor last year after leading the Tigers to an undefeated national championship run
Clifford is among 30 signal-callers on the list and one of four Big Ten quarterbacks selected, joining Wisconsin’s Jack Coan, Ohio State’s Justin Fields, and Minnesota’s Tanner Morgan. No Big Ten quarterback has won the award since its inception in 2004.
The Manning Award watch list is the third that Clifford has appeared on. He landed on the Davey O’Brien Award watch list, which recognizes the best quarterback in the country, as well as the Wuerffel Trophy watch list, which honors the college football player who “best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.”
