One Additional Penn State Student-Athlete Tests Positive For Coronavirus
Another student-athlete has tested positive for the coronavirus, according to Penn State Athletics’ latest testing update.
Between August 10 and August 14, the department conducted 230 tests, resulting in one new positive. Four tests remain pending. Penn State has administered 790 total tests since testing began earlier this summer.
The new figures bring the university’s cumulative positive cases to nine. Last week, Penn State reported eight total positive tests.
Each student who tested positive earlier this summer entered a 14-day quarantine before undergoing additional tests and resuming organized activities. When positives are reported, Penn State said it will also implement contact-tracing to identify individuals who may have crossed paths with those affected. Identified individuals will also be quarantined, even if they’re asymptomatic.
“We expect our student-athletes to follow University requirements and guidelines for limiting the spread of COVID-19, including wearing masks, practicing social distancing, washing their hands regularly and not gathering in large groups,” Athletics said in a statement.
Moving forward, Penn State Athletics will report unaggregated testing figures on a weekly basis. Previously, the department published biweekly findings.
The university’s first two biweekly testing reports came back with zero positives, but Penn State Athletics confirmed its first positive case in July. One week later, the university reported seven additional positives.
