Penn State Reports 28 More Positive Cases In COVID-19 Dashboard Update
Penn State reported 28 students across its campuses tested positive for the coronavirus this week, according to the latest update to the university’s COVID-19 Dashboard Friday.
The university performed 4,474 student asymptomatic tests between August 21 and 27, resulting in 14 positives. Penn State also conducted 160 symptomatic tests, which resulted in 14 positives as well.
Additionally, Penn State tested 30 employees but did not yield any positive results.
This week, 3,214 students and six employees tested negative for the virus. However, more than 1,200 tested individuals are still awaiting their results.
Twenty-seven of the reported student positives were observed at University Park. Twenty-five University Park students are currently in isolation, while 19 are in quarantine. Penn State Behrend reported the other positive student case.
The university reported two positive cases when its COVID-19 Dashboard debuted last Friday. Late Thursday night, Penn State reported an additional student tested positive. Because the dashboard reported no additional tests were administered, it’s likely the positive result came from a formerly pending test.
“We must all remain extremely vigilant and continue to adhere vigorously to the safety protocols that have been put in place to mitigate the spread of the virus,” Penn State President Eric Barron said in a release Friday. “This includes wearing face masks, maintaining physical distance from one another, practicing good hygiene, and staying home when feeling ill. With contact tracing and our efforts in quarantine and isolation, we believe we can limit the virus’ spread. I can’t emphasize enough that we must maintain our focus on our health guidelines.”
Penn State plans to update the dashboard with new testing statistics just once a week every Friday. The tool incorporates data from random surveillance testing, symptomatic testing, and self-reported testing via University Health Services or Occupational Medicine.
Throughout the semester, the university plans to randomly test 1% of its population each day at designated locations around campus, including the Bryce Jordan Center and Eisenhower Auditorium. Surveillance testing began on Monday, August 24.
Penn State began conducting approximately 30,000 at-home coronavirus tests before bringing students, faculty, and staff back to campus last week. So far, the university returned 153 positive results, with more than 5,000 tests left pending. Penn State said students who don’t complete pre-arrival testing by Friday, August 28 could have their semester registration canceled.
