Transfer Portal Roundup: Week Four

The college football season is finally in full swing, and even though Penn Staters needs to wait to play until late October, a few former stars performed well with their new programs.

All things considered, it was a fairly uneventful week for former Penn Staters and their current teams. Regardless, here’s a look at what they managed to do this weekend.

Justin Shorter, Florida

Shorter, a former five-star recruit, suited up for the Florida Gators in their season opener against Ole Miss. He caught just two passes for eight yards, but the Gators defeated Ole Miss 51-35 behind a six-touchdown performance from quarterback Kyle Trask. Shorter will try to carve out a solid role in the talented Florida offense next week against South Carolina.

Hunter Kelly, University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Kelly played some snaps for Charlotte in its 35-20 loss to Appalachian State. The former Penn State offensive lineman transferred to the 49ers as a graduate transfer this past offseason.

Daniel Joseph, North Carolina State

Defensive lineman Daniel Joesph didn’t appear on the stat sheet in NC State’s 45-24 loss to Virginia Tech Saturday night. His lack of snaps comes as a bit of a surprise following a five-tackle, two-sack performance against Wake Forest last week.

John Petrishen, Pitt

Petrishen also came up empty on the stat sheet this past week in Pitt’s 23-20 win over Louisville. Despite the quiet day, Petrishen made two tackles against Syracuse two weeks ago.

The former safety turned linebacker will try to receive more playing time than he did at Penn State for the No. 24 Pittsburgh Panthers.

DJ Brown, Louisiana Tech

DJ Brown did not appear for LA Tech this weekend. The junior cornerback’s squad defeated Houston Baptist 66-38.

Zech McPhearson, Texas Tech

McPhearson made four tackles in the Red Raiders’ brutal 63-56 overtime loss to Texas Saturday. Texas Tech now stands at 1-1 on the season with a season-opening 35-33 win over Houston Baptist in which the former Penn Stater made two tackles.
