Students Teaching Students Instructor Applications Now Open

Penn State’s Students Teaching Students program is now accepting instructor applications for the spring 2021 semester.

Applications must be submitted by Sunday, October 18 in order to be considered. Students should submit a draft of a syllabus proposing the course, find a faculty champion to sponsor the course, and submit the completed application here.

There are also rolling applications available for STS team member positions. The roles include fundraising, publicity, outreach, and more. Students can submit their applications for these positions here.

STS is a registered student organization for students interested in building their own courses. Partnered with Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence and the Office of Undergraduate Education, this student-led program allows students to teach an official Penn State course under the supervision of a faculty member.

Courses are electives ranging from one to three credits, covering multiple subjects across colleges. The courses are open to all Penn State students and focus on student engagement and peer-to-peer collaboration.

Since STS’s inception, 11 students have designed, developed, and facilitated eight different courses. Some of the past courses include rhetoric in Kanye West’s music and free LSAT Prep.

“We’ve seen students transform their honors theses, research, and life experiences into fun, engaging courses,” STS co-founder and co-director Michael Miller said. “We believe students offer valuable and unique perspectives, and building an official course is the perfect way to share them with others.”

For more information on the STS program, email Miller or check out the program’s website.
