Mount Nittany Medical Center Hits Coronavirus Hospitalizations Record

Mount Nittany Medical Center reported a record number of coronavirus-positive hospitalizations Friday, according to the health network.

Fifteen people ranging from 23 to 95 years old are currently hospitalized at the facility. Mount Nittany said the majority of its patients are elderly, several of whom are from nearby long-term care facilities.

The hospital could not confirm if the hospitalized 23-year-old is a Penn State student.

Since October 1, Mount Nittany has admitted 34 coronavirus-positive patients. The hospital admitted 16 virus-positive inpatients throughout September.

“Although recently reported trends reflecting a decline in overall community cases is encouraging, increased cases and hospitalizations among vulnerable elderly populations is cause for concern,” Dr. Nirmal Joshi, the hospital’s chief medical officer, said in a statement. “It is also a reminder to be even more vigilant and thoughtful in consistently practicing preventive measures, including masking, social distancing and frequent hand washing.”

Last week, Mount Nittany adapted its operations in response to rising patient admissions.

The hospital’s rise in admitted patients comes as Pennsylvania hit a new single-day coronavirus case record Friday. The Keystone State reported 2,219 new positives, breaking its previous high of 1,989 on April 9.

Centre County, meanwhile, added 59 cases Friday, bringing its total to 3,908 since the first case was confirmed in March. The county added one coronavirus-related death to bring its cumulative total to 16.

Although Penn State has found 3,538 positive University Park cases to date, it hasn’t reported any virus-related deaths or hospitalizations. The university is expected to update is COVID-19 Dashboard with new testing data Friday afternoon.
