Transfer Portal Roundup: Week Nine

Penn State football is 0-2 for the first time since 2012, and for the second straight week, rooting for the Nittany Lions has been pretty depressing.

While things in State College are rather bleak, let’s turn our attention toward some former Penn State football stars and their new teams.

Zech McPhearson, Texas Tech

McPhearson has easily been the best Penn State transfer so far this season, but his team really struggled this weekend. Texas Tech was manhandled by the No. 24 Oklahoma Sooners 62-28.

McPhearson led the Red Raiders with nine tackles, one of which was for a loss. He’s improving every week and has quickly become one of Texas Tech’s key defensive and special teams players.

The Red Raiders will travel to play TCU on Saturday, November 7.

Justin Shorter, Florida

Shorter finally found the endzone for the then-No. 10 Florida Gators during their 41-17 rout of Missouri. Shorter’s moment of glory came late in the third quarter when he caught a pass out in the flat for a two-yard touchdown.

That was Shorter’s only catch of the game, though. Despite the score, Shorter is still very much a depth receiving option for Kyle Trask and the Florida offense. The Gators must hope Shorter’s touchdown will be a catalyst for a breakout season.

Shorter will try to build on his performance when No. 8 Florida plays in its biggest game of the season against No. 5 Georgia.

DJ Brown, Louisiana Tech

Brown did not appear on the stat sheet for the Bulldogs this weekend. However, Louisiana Tech defeated UAB in a thrilling 37-34 overtime matchup.

The 4-3 Bulldogs will play the University of North Texas on Saturday, November 7.
