Student Restorative Justice Initiative To Host Webinar For Justice-Impacted Students

Penn State’s Student Restorative Justice Initiative (SRJI) will host a webinar focusing on how to start a justice-impacted student organization (JISO) from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, November 13.

The conversation will focus on what a JISO is, how they get created, and the process of running one. There will also be time at the end for students to ask the speakers questions.

Each speaker is a formerly-incarcerated current or former college student. They each have created their own respective organizations to help others who may have been in the same shoes they were in.

The SRJI defines justice-impacted as both formerly incarcerated and system impacted. A formerly incarcerated person is anyone who has been in a carceral setting (such as prison, juvenile detention, immigration detention, etc.) and is now released.

A system-impacted person includes those who have been incarcerated, someone who has been arrested or convicted without being incarcerated, or someone who has been impacted by a loved one being incarcerated.

Owen Abbey

Owen Abbey was a Secondary Education major before he graduated from the wonderful institution known as Penn State. When he was not writing for the blog, he enjoyed rooting for the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens, supporting Penn State basketball and softball, dreaming of all of the ways he would win the TV show "Survivor," and yes mom, actually doing school work. All of this work prepared him to teach his own class of students, which was always his true passion.
