Lady Lions Add Two Commits On National Signing Day

Penn State women’s basketball had two recruits ink letters of intent on National Signing Day Wednesday

Ymke Brouwer of the Swiss National Team and Kayla Thomas from Emerge Christian Academy in Beltsville, Maryland joined the Lady Lions’ Class of 2021.

Brouwer was ranked as a four-star recruit by Blue Star Europe and an “A” recruit by GoGlobal, per release, and was the first player to sign her letter. She was also ranked as the No. 12 international recruit by Premier Basketball.

“I’m very excited. I’m looking forward to joining the Penn State family,” Brouwer said in an NFL Draft-style video posted to Twitter. “I’m excited to learn a lot, to improve my game, and also to win a championship.”

Brouwer hails from Zürich, Switzerland, and found lots of success in the Swiss Basketball league. She averaged 16.4 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game while playing in the under-18 European Championship on the Swiss National Team.

Thomas, the second recruit to commit, is a three-star recruit, according to ESPN.

“We are thrilled to land Kayla and welcome her to our Penn State family,” head coach Carolyn Kieger said. “She fills an immediate need for our program as a true center who can dominate the paint on both ends of the floor.”

The 6’3″ forward has an impressive high school resume. She led the team to a 76-13 record across three seasons, picking up two district championships along the way.

Thomas and Brouwer will join a Lady Lions team that struggled under a new head coach during the 2019-20 season. But after making key lineup adjustments and bringing in new recruits over the offseason, Kieger is poised for a bounce-back year.
