Penn State Hoops’ ‘By Committee’ Attack Takes Big Step Forward
Penn State men’s basketball had a glaring concern following a stinging overtime loss to Seton Hall Sunday night.
Who will score points besides Seth Lundy? Well, that’s been put to rest following the Nittany Lions’ rout of Virginia Tech Tuesday.
Izaiah Brockington had one of his best games against the Hokies, scoring a career-high 24 points. He was helped out by Myreon Jones’ 14-point outing, while Myles Dread (11) and Sam Sessoms (10) also pitched in. Overall, it seemed like the Nittany Lions had it all put together from a scoring perspective.
The craziest part of the game? Lundy, who entered the night averaging nearly 23 points per game, scored zero points.
“Today, we played like we were supposed to play,” Jim Ferry said Tuesday. “Our philosophy is that we are an extra pass team, and when we have all these shooters on the floor, it’s more about the ball finding the shot instead of having the guys hunt shots down.”
Lundy may not have scored, but he still leads the team in points per game. He is joined by Brockington, Sessoms, and Jones in averaging double-digit points-per-game, with Dread near the mark as well.
The number of offensive weapons this team has, and the fact that any one of them can pop off and score, is dangerous, especially with that established so early in the season. It also proves that Penn State can succeed without winning the battle in the paint, something that Seton Hall exploited.
“We got to get better,” Ferry added. “It’s still only been four games. We are going to tweak a little things offensively, and hopefully it won’t change too much. We got to keep working on ourselves and keep getting better everyday.”
Having that improvement mindset will be beneficial for this Nittany Lions team as they travel to Michigan to kick off conference play. Regardless of who the next man up may be, the team’s scoring diversity has made it fun to watch.
