Tree Removals At Allen Street Gates, Lion Shrine To Begin December 15

Penn State’s Office of Physical Plant will begin two on-campus tree removal projects this month that will temporarily close sidewalks near the Allen Street Gate and restrict public Nittany Lion Shrine access for two days.

From December 15 to 16, crews will remove a large elm tree that hangs above the Allen Street Gates due to elm yellows disease, a common but aggressive plant ailment. The job will close sidewalks leading up the mall to Pollock Road, signified through taped-off areas and signage.

The next week, OPP will remove three large white oak trees near the Lion Shrine that have basal root rot, another common plant disease that can be caused by fungi and bacteria. The removal will close the landmark from December 22 to 23.

OPP plans to replant four trees at both locations in the spring.

Each day’s operation will begin around 6 a.m. and wrap up around 4 p.m.

“The Office of Physical Plant apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closures and appreciates the community’s understanding of the importance of maintaining the safety of these areas as well as the health of our campus trees,” Penn State said in a statement.
