[Photo Story] Record-Breaking Storm Makes Penn State, State College A Winter Wonderland

After an unusually quiet 2019-20 snow season, State College and Centre County received their fair share of wintery weather Wednesday.

A timely nor’easter blanketed the borough in about 15 inches of snow, according to AccuWeather, breaking its 24-hour December snowfall record by more than 2.5 inches. A December 1992 snowstorm set the previous high with 12.5 inches of powder.

In fact, Wednesday’s storm resulted in more snowfall than the entire 2019-20 season, which set a record-low 13.2 inches dating back to 1893, when dependable weather records came into the fold. It was also Centre County’s largest snowstorm since February 2003.

Naturally, Penn Staters and State College residents didn’t hesitate to take part in some wintery fun. Here’s a look at what campus and the borough looked like 15 inches of snow later.

Beginning Wednesday morning, the storm quickly left borough sidewalks snowy and roads slippery. On the bright side, State College looked like it was straight out of a Christmas movie!

Back on campus, the Symbol of Our Best looked even better covered in an inch or two of snow.

By the time morning rolled around, campus transformed into a bona fide winter wonderland. Pattee Mall looked especially peaceful covered in untouched snow.

Still, some folks on campus still needed to trek across the snow Thursday morning. Good thing we didn’t need to walk across campus to get to our finals today.

Something about Old Main in the snow makes it just that much more majestic.

While most students are at home, Penn State’s Operations of Physical Plant staffers are hard at work cleaning up campus. They deserve a hearty shoutout!

West campus didn’t look too shabby either.

Back downtown, the streets were quiet as State College took advantage of a rare and peaceful snow day.

And is there anything more symbolic of a Penn State winter than a snowy Beaver Stadium? She’s a beaut!

Two hands up if Penn State football’s going to win this Saturday.

Editor’s Note: All featured photos were taken by Sam Brungo, Onward State’s resident townie, who voluntarily trekked out into the snow during finals week. What a guy!
