Josh Reaves Signs With Houston Rockets’ NBA G League Affiliate

Penn State men’s basketball alum Josh Reaves has found a new home in the NBA’s G League.

Following a stint with the Dallas Mavericks, Reaves signed with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers Tuesday, the Houston Rockets’ G League affiliate for the 2020-21 season.

Reaves went undrafted in the 2019 NBA Draft before signing a two-way deal with the Mavericks. Reaves made his NBA debut on January 2, 2020 in a win over the Brooklyn Nets and appeared in three more games last season for Dallas, including some contents from inside the “NBA bubble” over the summer.

Reaves played in 121 games over a four-year span at Penn State, averaging around 29 minutes and nine points per game. Reaves thrived on defense, where he received placements on two Big Ten All-Defensive teams and was named the 2018-19 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. He led the Big Ten in steals in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons and helped Penn State to a 2018 NIT title.

The 18-team G League’s shortened season will take place in a “bubble” at Walt Disney World, just like the 2019-20 NBA Playoffs. Although teams were told to expect the season to begin by early February, no schedule is available yet.

Reaves is one of the few Penn State alumni playing professional basketball these days. Former teammate Lamar Stevens is carving out a significant role with the Cleveland Cavaliers, while Tim Frazier is on a short-term deal with the Memphis Grizzlies.
