Penn State Quarterback Will Levis Enters Transfer Portal

Penn State quarterback Will Levis entered the NCAA transfer portal Thursday evening, according to a post on his Twitter page.

In a statement, the redshirt sophomore said he’ll explore a graduate transfer with three years of eligibility remaining. He enrolled in the Smeal College of Business and earned a bachelor’s degree in finance this year.

“The past three years that I have spent at the Pennsylvania State University have been filled with tremendous experience, friendships, and valuable lessons that have helped transform the 18-year-old boy that walked onto campus in May of 2018 into the man that I am today,” Levis wrote. “Penn State has provided me with everything I could have asked for from an academic, athletic, and social development standpoint.”

Levis also thanked his professors, head coach James Franklin, and his teammates for shaping his experience at Penn State. He said the Nittany Lions’ fans and students are “beyond outstanding.”

“I am extremely grateful to have been given the opportunity to be able to play and contribute for such a historic program,” Levis said. “The blood, sweat, and tears that I have shed alongside my brothers here are deeply engraved in my memory and will never be forgotten.”

Levis is now the second scholarship quarterback to hit the transfer portal this offseason. Micah Bowens, who came to Penn State as a three-star quarterback prospect last year, transferred to Oklahoma last week.

Levis’s likely departure leaves Penn State with just three quarterbacks on its roster: Sean Clifford, Ta’Quan Roberson, and Christian Veilleux. It seems likely a fourth could arrive through the transfer portal, where the Nittany Lions have been rather active already.

In 15 total appearances at Penn State, Levis racked up 473 rushing yards and 644 passing yards, primarily as a backup to Clifford. Levis notably started in Penn State’s loss to Iowa and threw for 106 yards on 13 completions.

Levis found success as a dynamic run-pass option threat throughout the 2020 season. His “Falcon Package,” although brutally predictable at times, led to three rushing touchdowns in the Nittany Lions’ nine-game season. At one point, he took 25 straight snaps at quarterback without attempting a pass.
