Your Guide To THON 2021’s Theme Hours

THON is almost here, folks!

We all know that this year’s THON won’t provide the same experience as past THON weekends. But to help keep spectators and volunteers engaged this weekend, THON will host planned theme hours to engage spectators all weekend long.

The online document contains full descriptions of each theme hour’s activities and what they entail. Each theme hour will also have a Spotify playlist dedicated to the overall theme.

Here’s a brief breakdown of THON 2021’s theme hours:

Friday, February 19

9 p.m. — Nickelodeon

Are ya ready, kids? The Nickelodeon theme hour will include activities ranging from crossword puzzles and Buzzfeed quizzes to TikTok and social media challenges. This theme hour’s Spotify playlist features classics from “Victorious,” “Big Time Rush,” and “Drake and Josh” to help you relive your favorite childhood shows.

10 p.m. — Game Shows

Spectators can keep their minds sharp on Friday night by putting their competitive skills to the test during the Game Shows theme hour with games like “The Price is Right” and minute-to-win-its. This theme hour’s Spotify Playlist features the “Jeopardy!”, “Family Feud,” and “Wheel of Fortune” theme songs.

Saturday, February 21

8 a.m. — Carnival

Nothing says “good morning” like kicking things off with a Carnival theme! Activities include a face painting contest, a mime pose TikTok challenge, and tweeting pictures of your pets dressed as carnival animals. Get in the Carnival spirit by playing songs from “The Greatest Showman,” One Direction, and “Baby Shark.”

9 a.m. — Rock N’ Roll

As Sir Elton John once said, “Saturday Night’s Morning’s Alright (For Fighting THON).” Spectators and volunteers can play Just Dance videos, musical chairs, or learn a new Rock n’ Roll TikTok dance. Of course, classic rock songs by Queen, Billy Joel, and Elvis Presley will be played to hype you up.

10:30 a.m. — Disney

…And you’re watching Disney Channel! The Disney theme hour will include a Disney version of heads up and charades, spot the difference, karaoke, trivia, and name that tune. “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” is in this theme’s playlist, too.

Noon — #TBT

THON is taking it waaaayyy back at noon on Saturday with the Throwback-themed hour. So, throw on some old clothes and crank up the classic tunes (again) to take a trip down memory lane by going on a throwback scavenger hunt or joining the pillow forts contest. Whatever decade you’re heading back to, the #TBT playlist covers the 80s to the early 2000s.

1 p.m. — Totally Awesome ’80s

The throwback theme continues but instead, this hour’s theme is dedicated all to the 80s. From neon colors to tie-dye designs, the 80s theme is surely going to be totally radical. Once again, the playlist for this hour provides plenty of classic hits.

3 p.m. — Superheroes

Marvel fans, this one is for you. What could be better than a whole hour dedicated to all things superheroes, like making your own cape or creating a superhero TikTok with the people you’ll be celebrating THON weekend with? You can even jam out to the soundtracks of different Avengers movies.

5 p.m. — Winter Wonderland

Although it’s almost been two months since Christmas, who says that you can’t still listen to Christmas music? The Winter Wonderland theme entails making paper snowflakes, or homemade snowballs, or watching holiday movies. It’s an even better theme to go before another White Out an hour later.

6 p.m. — GameDay

You know what goes well with a gameday-themed hour? A White Out pep rally! To prepare for the pep rally, you can recreate your own tailgating experience by playing a game of Toss the Flag or Fumble and wear your best White Out attire. As we all know, it’s not gameday without a playlist featuring Beaver Stadium classics.

9 p.m. — Space

A space theme is out of this world! Plenty of space-themed activities like creating space Zoom backgrounds or stargazing on the SkyView Lite app. You can top it all off by listening to the space-themed playlist.

10 p.m. — Olympics

Saturday night will close out with a trip to the Olympics. Dancers are encouraged to participate in the Olympics Scavenger Hunt to boost their morale at the end of the night. Other events include a toilet paper toss and house bowling. You can get in the mood with this playlist made for Olympic champions.

Sunday, February 22

8 a.m. — Jungle Adventure

We’re heading into the jungle for the penultimate THON theme hour. Bring on your best animal prints to get in the spirit with a Kahoot! and create another animal-themed Zoom background.

10 a.m. – Luau

There’s no better way to close out the last of the final THON 2021 theme hours with a luau. Break out your best tropical gear and turn on the luau playlist to take your mind off the State College cold.
