Report: Penn State Hoops’ Jamari Wheeler To Enter Transfer Portal

A second Penn State men’s basketball star is reportedly entering the NCAA transfer portal.

Just hours after teammate John Harrar reportedly entered, team leader and guard Jamari Wheeler is purportedly expected to join the portal following four seasons with the program, according to multiple reports.

Wheeler’s potential decision comes just a day after the Nittany Lions hired Micah Shrewsberry to be their next head coach, ultimately moving on from interim coach Jim Ferry.

Known for his lockdown defense, Wheeler was one of the cornerstones for Ferry’s squad during the 2020-21 season. He posted 6.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.8 steals per game, all of which were career highs. Additionally, he was named to the Big Ten’s All-Defensive team for the second consecutive season.

While Wheeler has already played four collegiate seasons, the NCAA granted an extra year of eligibility to student-athletes due to the pandemic.

The Florida native came to Penn State back in 2017, choosing the Nittany Lions over schools such as Duquesne, UTSA, and Auburn. Since arriving, he’s appeared in 127 games and has started 84, including every game the past two seasons.

If the reports are true, Wheeler’s departure would be a brutal blow for the Nittany Lions, who are attempting to bounce back under Shrewsberry after missing this year’s NCAA and NIT Tournaments.
