Penn State Women’s Hockey’s Kiara Zanon Named National Rookie Of The Year

Penn State women’s hockey forward Kiara Zanon was named the Women’s Hockey National Rookie of the Year Wednesday morning.

Zanon is the first Nittany Lion in program history to receive the prestigious honor.

Zanon finished her season leading the CHA and all NCAA rookies nationally with 30 points (10 goals, 20 assists). Her stellar play previously earned her CHA Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year.

Additionally, she was named as a finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, which is annually awarded to the top player in women’s college hockey. She is the only rookie among this year’s 10 finalists.

Despite a shortened season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Zanon shattered multiple program records. The freshman racked up 1.43 points and .95 assists per game, and her nine multiple-point games in 21 games played set a Penn State single-season best.

The New York native became the first Nittany Lion to win an individual national award when she was named Hockey Commissioners Associate Women’s National Rookie of the Month this past December. Zanon also tallied three Rookie of the Month awards in December, January, and February, as well as four CHA Rookie of the Week awards.
