Podward State: Season 4, Episode 11 Ft. Sara Civian

On this episode of Podward State, hosts Samuel Brungo and Matthew Paolizzi are joined by Onward State men’s hockey beat writer Acacia Aster Broder and Carolina Hurricanes beat writer Sara Civian.

Civian, a proud Onward State alum, opens the show talking about how she chose Penn State, became a writer, and fell in love with hockey. She chats about the rewards that her job at The Athletic brings to her and some of the differences between covering college and professional hockey.

Being in a predominately male industry, Civian discusses what it’s like to be a woman in sports media and some of the challenges that it brings. She explains how she deals with adversity and gives advice to young women interested in a similar path.

Finally, Civian recalls some of her favorite memories, both at Penn State and in sports media in general, including some of her favorite interactions.

Podward State is an Onward State-produced podcast that will release weekly episodes this spring on Spotify and YouTube. Each will feature discussions about all things Penn State, including sports, news, student life, entertainment, and more.
