Weekly COVID-19 Testing Required For Unvaccinated Students
All unvaccinated Penn State students living on campus must now get tested for COVID-19 at least once per week, according to the university.
Unvaccinated students are also required to continue wearing masks on campus. Fully vaccinated students can skip masking and testing altogether.
Penn State’s new requirements apply to any campus with more than 25 students currently living in the dorms. And with hundreds of students back at University Park for the summer, that applies in Happy Valley, too.
Penn State said it will email reminders to students who need to get tested. At this time, it’s unclear how the university would know if an unvaccinated student was skipping testing if they hadn’t disclosed their vaccination status — an optional process for students and employees.
A Penn State spokesperson said non-compliance could result in sanctions ranging from warnings, to removal of campus housing, to suspension.
Although it’s not required, students can upload a picture of their completed COVID-19 vaccine cards through myUHS to opt of testing. They’re also able to enter weekly drawings for a number of prizes, including signed footballs and $1,000 payments.
Walk-up COVID-19 testing at University Park is available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, at Pegula Ice Arena. The site won’t be open on Monday, July 5, due to Penn State’s holiday closure.
This summer’s testing policy is one of the very few exclusionary practices for unvaccinated students, joining the university’s latest masking requirements. Penn State has, so far, not required COVID-19 vaccinations for students and employees before the fall semester begins.
