Update, 6:30 p.m., via StateCollege.com: Chris Tooley is charged with one third-degree misdemeanor count of theft and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, the Centre County District Attorney’s Office confirmed to StateCollege.com on Friday afternoon. Tooley was not named in the department press release and the case has not yet appeared in district court dockets.

Original Story: A former State College police officer is facing criminal charges after allegedly taking possession of an individual’s vape pen and later using it as their own.

According to a media release, the officer took possession of the vape pen, which was later turned over to the department. The pen was supposed to be returned to its owner but was instead personally used by the officer.

After learning of the incident, State College police contacted the Pennsylvania State Police to launch an independent investigation, which resulted in criminal charges being filed in district court.

State College police “immediately” placed the involved officer on administrative leave, but the officer resigned before an internal investigation and discipline process could conclude.

“The State College Police Department prides itself on our professionalism and integrity and is deeply saddened by the negative impact this event may have on the public’s trust,” the department said in a statement. “We hope that the department’s actions will help restore credibility in The State College Police Department’s commitment to providing the exemplary police services our community expects.”

The involved officer’s name was not disclosed by the department. Charging documents in the case were not yet available Friday morning.

The department said it can’t comment on the incident any further. The Centre County District Attorney’s office is handling the ongoing criminal case.
