Sandy Barbour Joins New NCAA Committee To ‘Reshape College Sports’

Penn State Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Sandy Barbour will join bigwigs from around the country in developing ideas to “reshape colleges sports” and the NCAA.

Barbour is one of 23 members of the NCAA’s new Constitution Committee, which aims to eventually propose a new governance model “that allows for quicker change without sacrificing broader values.” She’s notably the only Big Ten representative on the committee.

“Each of the appointees offers important insight on the transformation that’s needed for the future,” NCAA President Mark Emmert said in a release. “The time is now for substantive change. And future change must focus on serving student-athletes.”

The Constitution Committee will begin working in November and submit draft proposals for feedback. The NCAA’s Board of Governors will receive final proposals by December 15 and schedule full-membership votes in January.

At this time, it’s unclear exactly what proposed NCAA models would look like. In a statement, the NCAA said the committee aims to propose “dramatic” changes that reimagine college sports and help the organization better support student-athletes.

The committee’s founding comes just weeks after the NCAA adopted legislation allowing student-athletes to profit from the use of their names, images, and likenesses (NIL). Student-athlete compensation will almost certainly remain a common talking point as the NCAA seeks to shake up its operations.
