Three-Star Guard Sonny Johnson Jr. Decommits From Penn State Hoops

Penn State men’s basketball has officially lost the last recruit of the Pat Chambers era.

Three-star guard Sonny Johnson Jr. decommitted from the Nittany Lions in May, and announced Wednesday afternoon he is committed to Detroit Mercy.

Johnson retweeted a tweet from college basketball recruiting analyst Tobias Bass.

The 5’10” guard originally committed to Penn State in January of 2020, when Chambers was still the head coach. He remained committed when interim coach Jim Ferry took over, but decided to retest the waters when Micah Shrewsberry took the job. Since his arrival in Happy Valley, Shrewsberry recruited a different 5’10” guard to the Class of 2022 in Kanye Clary.

Johnson is currently ranked as the fifth-best player in Ohio and the No. 183 best player in the country, according to 247Sports. Before committing to Detroit, he held offers from Kent State, Michigan State, Youngstown State, and Nebraska.
