UPUA Creates Wellness Fund To Cover UHS Expenses

The 16th Assembly of the University Park Undergraduate Association met Wednesday night for the second time in person this semester.

The meeting began with a presentation from University Health Services (UHS) Director Micah Griffin. He talked about the different programs UPUA and UHS can work on together and help the general student body.

UPUA President Erin Boas and Vice President Najee Rodriguez both gave opening remarks following the presentation, and then the assembly moved forward into discussing legislation.

Old Business

The assembly moved forward tabled old business from last week. The assembly revisited the internal elections for the Chair of the Ad-Hoc Committee on Continued Policy and Planning for COVID-19 and Its Variants.

Jason Nelson was the sole nominee. He spoke about the need for this committee and what his plans would be should he get elected. There was a lot of debate about whether he would be a good fit for the position, but at the end of the day, he was elected to the chair position with a 23-6-1 vote.

New Business

The only legislation on the docket was Bill 06-16, Creation of UPUA Wellness Fund. The bill would allocate $10,000 to the fund to help cover UHS bills that students can’t afford. All students would be eligible for the fund, but there is no guarantee that any given student will receive any money from the fund.

Bill 06-16 passed unanimously.
