Online Encyclopedia For Centre County Culture & History Launches

An online encyclopedia covering Centre County culture and history just went live this month. The site has countless articles covering the history of major Penn State and Centre County organizations, including the Blue Band and the football team.

The site was created by Ford Risley, a professor in Penn State’s Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications. He is also an editor on the site and edits posts from a group of 44 contributors.

The encyclopedia crosses 17 subjects that cover a wide variety of topics, spanning from people to education to military and war to art and culture. The information compiled spans from the 1600s to the 21 century.

The site is sponsored by the Centre County Historical Society, which works collaboratively with local, regional, county, and state organizations to preserve the history of the area.

Some examples of articles include the All-American Rathskeller, George Atherton, and the State College Spikes. They cover all of the unique things that make Centre County unlike any other county in Pennsylvania.

If there is a topic that hasn’t been covered yet, send the encyclopedia’s staff a message at [email protected].

About the Author

Owen Abbey

Owen Abbey was a Secondary Education major before he graduated from the wonderful institution known as Penn State. When he was not writing for the blog, he enjoyed rooting for the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens, supporting Penn State basketball and softball, dreaming of all of the ways he would win the TV show "Survivor," and yes mom, actually doing school work. All of this work prepared him to teach his own class of students, which was always his true passion. He still can be found on Twitter @theowenabbey and can be reached for questions and comments at [email protected]
