DeAndre Malcolm, Jaylen Carr Receive Fourth-Ever ‘Guide State Forward’ Award
Penn State seniors DeAndre Malcolm and Jaylen Carr were named the recipients of Penn State Homecoming’s fourth-ever “Guide State Forward” award Saturday afternoon while the Nittany Lions played Illinois at Beaver Stadium.
“We are so honored to continue the legacy of diversity and gender inclusivity with our student court winners, the Guide State Forward Award,” Homecoming Court Relations Director Alison Johnston said.
Malcolm is a senior majoring in public relations with a minor in Spanish. He’s the president of the Penn State Student Black Caucus and a representative for the National Millennial/Gen Z Community. Malcolm is also a resident assistant in East Halls and a co-founding member of the Bellisario Alliance for Multicultural Students.
Carr, a fellow senior, is a civil engineering major. He acts as social chair for the American Society of Civil Engineers, is a Millennium Scholar, and treasurer for the National Society of Black Engineers. Carr also mentors for the BLUEprint Peer Mentoring Group and the Multicultural Engineering Program. Along with that, he’s vice president of Standards for the National Pan-Hellenic Council, and serves as a resident assistant in West Halls.
2018 marked the first time the award was presented after Homecoming implemented it as a replacement for crowning a king and queen, coinciding with its gender-neutral court. After Homecoming announced this year’s court, seniors voted to decide who would receive the prestigious honor.
Congratulations, DeAndre and Jaylen!
