Penn State Ad Featured In Viral Reddit Post

Penn State once again found itself at the center of a viral moment thanks to a Reddit post that recently reached the top of the website.

One Reddit user posted to the subreddit “r/oddlyterrifying” about an issue with his Windows computer. His computer “blue screened,” which really just means it crashed, and what appeared to be a webcam picture of a woman appeared on the bottom corner of his monitor. The problem? It wouldn’t go away.

Upon further inspection, another Reddit user discovered that the “webcam” feed was actually a still frame from a 2018 Penn State brand ad. The image of the woman burnt into the computer screen is identical to the opening shot of the advertisement.

The user who identified the ad, who appears to be a Penn State student, said they recognized it from watching recent football games. The post has since garnered more than 85,000 upvotes, which is quite a lot for the non-Reddit users out there.

Why the frame was burnt into the screen when the computer crashed is still a mystery. Some users hypothesized it was burnt into the monitor from the YouTube mini-player, which minimizes videos to the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.

The original poster can take some solace in knowing that the woman on his screen was just an actor from a good ol’ fashioned ad from Dear Old State, not a creepy appearance from a random person’s webcam.
