Penn State Hoops Matchups Canceled Amid Positive COVID-19 Tests

Update, December 28: Penn State men’s basketball’s upcoming matchup with Delaware State on December 29 has been canceled due to positive COVID-19 tests within the opposing program. The game won’t be rescheduled, according to the team.

Penn State previously had two matchups canceled due to its own COVID-19 concerns. Now, the Nittany Lions will need to wait a little bit longer to hit the court again.

Should the season progress as planned, Penn State will return to action on Sunday, January 2, against Indiana. The game will tip off at 4 p.m. from the Bryce Jordan Center.

Orginal Story: Penn State men’s basketball’s upcoming matchups with VCU and Quinnipiac have been canceled due to an unspecified number of positive COVID-19 results within the Nittany Lions’ program, the team announced late this week.

The matchups against VCU and Quinnipiac were respectively set for Saturday, December 18, and Wednesday, December 22. Both games will not be rescheduled, Penn State said. Information for ticket refunds is available online.

“The health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and the broader community are of the utmost importance,” the team said in a statement. “Therefore, as part of the protocols established by the Big Ten Conference and Penn State Athletics medical staff, and in consultation with University, local and national officials and guidelines, individuals with a positive test have been put into isolation.”

Penn State also said it’s rolling out contact tracing procedures, including additional testing, for anyone within the program who might have been exposed.

Head coach Micah Shrewsberry was originally scheduled to speak to the media Thursday afternoon. Without a game to preview, though, Penn State canceled his availability.

For now, it’s unclear how many people within Penn State’s program are affected by the COVID-19 breakout. The team has historically not commented on its vaccination rates, but 89.8% of students and 90% of employees at University Park are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to Penn State’s COVID-19 Dashboard.

Should protocols allow a swift return, Penn State’s next game would come against Delaware State at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 29, at the Bryce Jordan Center.
