Penn State To Host Women’s History Month Events

March is Women’s History Month, and to celebrate, organizations across Penn State’s campuses will host a handful of events.

This year’s theme from the National Women’s History Alliance is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.”

Here are some of the events being hosted at the University Park campus. You can find schedule updates and a full slate of events across the commonwealth here.

‘Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope’: Q&A, Book Signing With Jessamyn Stanley

Tuesday, March 1 | 6:30 p.m. | Freeman Auditorium: HUB-Robeson Center

Author, entrepreneur, and yoga teacher Jessamyn Stanely will speak about her book and work in wellness and intersectionality. She’ll speak about yoga, healing, and her book “Yoke: My Yoga of Self-Acceptance,” which will be available to purchase and be signed by Stanley.

‘Waitress’

Thursday, March 3 | 7:30 p.m. | Eisenhower Auditorium

Touring Broadway is bringing the musical hit “Waitress” to Penn State. It’s the first Broadway musical to have four women in the top four creative spots: book, score, choreography, and direction. Tickets can be purchased through the Center for the Performing Arts.

Menstrual Health Expo

Wednesday, March 16 | 5:30 p.m. | HUB Flex Theater

Students can drop in from 5:30 to 8 p.m. to learn about contemporary menstruation topics. The expo will share resources and provide activities to erase the stigma surrounding menstruation.

Zine Workshop for Self-Acceptance

Thursday, March 17 | 6 p.m. | Pattee Library W13

University Libraries is hosting a zine workshop for attendees to explore self-acceptance through creativity. All supplies will be provided, but registration is required.

Pride in Your Ride Night: Women & Queer Night At The Bike Den

Wednesday, March 23 | 5:30 p.m. | Penn State Bike Den, ground level of West Parking Deck

The Gender Equity Center, the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity, and the Bike Den are hosting a night to celebrate women, femmes, non-binary, and LGBT+ folks, as well as a night to learn about cycling and bike maintenance. There will be discussions on Bicycle Safety 101 and “Ride or Die: The Forgotten History of Bicycles and Feminism.”

“Yoke: My Yoga of Self-Acceptance” Book Discussion With Jessamyn Stanley

Thursday, March 24 | 6 p.m. | Pattee Library W13

Jessamyn Stanely will return for another discussion to dive deeper into her book and her personal essays in collaboration with the Gender Equity Center. The discussion will focus on topics such as self-love, racism, fat-shaming, and wellness practices. Registration is required for this event.

EmpowHERment Summit

Thursday, March 31 | via Whova Event Platform

This day-long summit through Penn State World Campus is aimed to push the stereotypes surrounding women. It is open to anyone to attend, with conversations around business, sexual violence, holistic healing, and more. You can register and find the summit agenda here.

‘Shifting The Paradigm: Providing Hope & Healing Through The Integration Allopathic & Complementary Medicinal Practices’ From Keynote Speaker Dr. Shelia Patel

Thursday, March 31 | 7 p.m. | via Zoom

As the final event for the EmpowHERment Summit, Keynote speaker Dr. Shelia Patel will be discussing her journey of becoming the chief medical officer for Chopra and a board-certified family physician. Dr. Patel will also speak about bringing holistic healing into western medicine, mindfulness, and what it’s like to be a woman in the medical field. You can register for the keynote event here.
