Report: Penn State Hoops To Play Butler In 2022 Gavitt Games
Penn State men’s basketball will reportedly play in the upcoming Gavitt Games for the first time since 2019.
Micah Shrewsberry’s squad is set to play Butler in this year’s edition, according to CBS Sports insider Jon Rothstein. The matchup between the Nittany Lions and Bulldogs is one of eight games in the annual Big Ten/Big East challenge.
The series of games is named after Dave Gavitt, who is a former head coach at Providence College and the first commissioner of the Big East Conference. Penn State last played in the Gavitt Games in 2019 when it beat Georgetown 81-66.
When Penn State tips off against Butler, it’ll be the fourth all-time meeting between the two squads. The Bulldogs own a slight edge over the Nittany Lions thus far with a 2-1 record.
Shrewsberry served as an assistant coach on Brad Stevens’ staff at Butler from 2008 to 2011. During Shrewsberry’s time at Butler, the Bulldogs had an 87-21 record and appeared in back-to-back national championship games.
Penn State played in the inaugural year of the Gavitt Games back in 2015 and beat DePaul 68-62 at the Bryce Jordan Center. Three years later, Penn State traveled to Chicago to face DePaul once again, but it lost in overtime 72-70.
