Class Of 2023 Recruit Branden Wentzel Commits To Penn State Wrestling

Cael Sanderson is at it again, folks.

Penn State wrestling’s Class of 2023 got stronger this week when Pennsylvania state champion Branden Wentzel announced via Instagram that he’s joining the Nittany Lions.

“I would like to announce I will be furthering my athletic and academic career at Penn State University,” Wentzel said. “I would like to thank everyone who’s helped me along the day, and give my parents a special thanks for believing in me along the way.”

Wentzel has posted a 117-15 record across three seasons at Montoursville High School, according to PA-Wrestling.com. He’s a three-time PIAA state placer, which includes a gold finish during his freshman year and bronze and silver finishes in his sophomore and junior seasons, respectively.

The Pennsylvania native posted his best winning percentage this past season when he dominated with a 41-4 record (91%). He’s a two-time first-place finisher in the region, district, and section. According to PA-Wrestling.com, Wentzel has spent time wrestling at 113 and 120 pounds in high school.

Wentzel’s commitment continues what has been a busy offseason for Penn State wrestling. Most recently, a Penn State spokesperson confirmed that head coach Cael Sanderson signed an extension with the program that’ll keep the legendary coach in Happy Valley.
