Penn State Football’s Tariq Castro-Fields Claimed By Commanders
Former Penn State football cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields has found a new home.
After being waived by the 49ers Tuesday, the Washington Commanders claimed the defensive back the following day, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.
San Francisco drafted Castro-Fields in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft with the No. 221 overall pick. Despite using a draft pick on him, the 49ers decided to part ways with the Maryland native. Now, Castro-Fields will try to stick with Commanders with the regular season right around the corner.
Castro-Fields spent five years in Happy Valley and established himself as a leader on the defensive side of the ball. He appeared in 52 games over the five years and made 30 starts, totaling 139 tackles, 25 passes defended, and three interceptions. During his time at Penn State, Castro-Fields earned third-team All-Big Ten honors once, and he was named an All-Big Ten honorable mention twice.
Castro-Fields will reunite with Penn State teammates Jahan Dotson and Shaka Toney in Washington DC. The Commanders drafted Dotson in the first round of this past year’s draft, while they took Toney in the seventh round of the 2021 draft.
