Power Ranking Every Irving’s Smoothie

Everybody loves Irving’s, folks.

From its signature bagel sandwiches to its delicious shakes, the popular cafe on College Avenue has something for everyone to enjoy.

That being said, its smoothies are arguably one of its best menu items, and after the cafe added two new smoothies to its already stacked roster, we figured it was time to try them all and create the definitive ranking of Irving’s smoothies.

With lots of heavyweight contenders, this was no easy task. But, after hours of scientific research and deliberation amongst our team, I believe we have delicately crafted an indisputable ranking of these smoothies.

1. Joe Papaya

I discussed this ranking with a lot of people, and despite varied opinions, there was a collective agreement among most that the Joe Papaya smoothie was one of, if not the best smoothie at Irving’s or maybe even in State College. It’s tropical, yet refreshing and familiar. This smoothie uses the perfect blend of fruits to create an incredible experience for the taste buds.

2. Laguna Peach

Out of everyone I talked to, if they didn’t have Joe Papaya at No. 1, they had Laguna Peach. Honestly, I can see the argument. Its flavors are similar to Joe Papaya’s but with an extra peachy flare that brings back memories of a summer evening. It may have fallen to No. 2 on this list, but it holds a special place in my heart.

3. Very Berry

A good “berry” smoothie is one of the staples of a good smoothie shop… it has to be done right. Luckily, Irving’s Very Berry smoothie doesn’t disappoint. While it doesn’t “wow” in the same way that Joe Papaya or Laguna Peach does, its consistency is impressive and admirable. It’s another great smoothie choice.

4. Eyeopener

This is the higher-ranked of the two new smoothies on the menu, and I’d like to say that it pleasantly surprised me! The inclusion of granola in a smoothie did throw me off at first, but the smoothie is remarkably sweet. If you can get past the slight grit that the granola adds, you’ll probably love this new smoothie that really lets the banana shine.

5. SOB

Irving’s claims this is “the original recipe,” and I can see how it’s a long-time staple. This is the perfect example of a very solid smoothie. It doesn’t impress, but it gets the job done. Sure, there are tastier smoothies on the menu with strawberries as the base, but this is a great option to come back to every once and a while, especially if you love oranges.

6. Blueberry Bliss

This is the second of the two new smoothies, and I think the potential is there. It’s very rare to see a smoothie utilize blueberries in a starring role, rather than as a supportive character, and I respect this smoothie for that. Unfortunately, blueberries aren’t super sweet on their own, and this smoothie matches that. With a little extra sweetener, like some extra honey, I think this could shoot up the list.

7. Going Green

Every good team needs its role players, and Going Green is the healthy teammate of this power-packed squad. It’s not the tastiest smoothie, I’ll admit, but it has its role, and it’s playing it well. If you’re looking for something nutritional to hold you over until dinner, Going Green has you covered. But, it won’t hit the game-winning three-pointer (metaphorically) when you need a delicious pick-me-up. Get my drift?
