Penn State Men’s & Women’s Soccer Unranked In United Soccer Coaches Week Seven Poll
Penn State men’s and women’s soccer both dropped off national rankings in the United Soccer Coaches Poll on Tuesday. Both teams tumbled off the poll following a winless week.
On the men’s side, head coach Jeff Cook’s team went 0-1-1 on the week after a loss to Villanova and a 2-2 tie against Northwestern, each on the road. The team’s season record dropped to 4-4-3 with five games remaining in the regular season.
Despite a winless week, redshirt freshman Ben Liscum tallied his first career goal against Northwestern. Liscum’s goal was dually assisted by Seth Kuhn and Liam Butts. Peter Mangione scored the Nittany Lions’ second goal in the 2-2 draw, which was also assisted by Butts.
Now, Penn State men’s soccer is gearing up for a home game at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 7, against Michigan State. The Spartans have a similar 4-3-2 record and should prove to be a challenge for the Nittany Lions.
For Penn State women’s soccer, the previously No. 6-ranked squad saw its first two conference losses. The Nittany Lions lost a close 2-1 matchup to Michigan State followed by a blowout 3-0 upset at the hands of Ohio State. The blue and white received 13 votes but were excluded from the top 25.
Erica Dambach’s team formerly maintained a clean sheet in the Big Ten but following five goals against Katherine Asman and the Penn State defense, the conference shutout no longer exists.
The Nittany Lions next match is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 9, against Maryland from College Park. The team holds an all-time 12-1 record against the Terrapins and won the previous eight matches. That game will be available to stream on BTN+.
