Musician Ashe Emphasizes Giving Yourself Grace In SPA Concert & Conversation

Singer-songwriter Ashe, best known for her song “Moral of the Story,” performed and spoke to students in Alumni Hall on Thursday as the Student Programming Association’s (SPA) guest to honor Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The event, themed “Everyone Knows Someone,” was co-sponsored by SPA and the Gender Equity Center.

Ashe began the lecture by talking about what Domestic Violence Awareness Month means to her and put a huge emphasis on giving herself grace when it comes to difficult things.

“This month means awareness and inclusion to me, and maybe that we will even listen to each other a bit more,” Ashe said. “Knowing that you are not alone is most important.”

After that, she transitioned to her first song of the night, “Love is Letting Go,” which is a new single from her unreleased album, “Rae.”

The song touches on her brother’s struggle with addiction but has an underlying message about letting go of something that is no longer good for you.

“It’s a lot like a disease, and there is a lot of self-loathing that goes along with it and a lot of insecurity, and you don’t ever believe that you are good enough to get out,” Ashe said.

The conversation also touched on the many signs of an abusive relationship and the importance of helping victims trying to get out of domestic violence situations.

“We’re not weak. What you should know about a survivor of domestic abuse is that this is not a fragile, weak human who could not handle their life,” Ashe said.

Ashe transitioned into another song, “Till Forever Falls Apart.” The ballad is the opposite of some of her other works, and this one highlighted positive relationships and more specifically friendships.

The final pieces of the conversation emphasized the need for validation and how to work toward a place where survivors of domestic violence can find themselves in healthy relationships.

Ashe concluded the event with her song top song, “Moral of the Story,” before wrapping up the event.

Her sophomore album, “Rae,” comes out on Friday, October 14.
