No. 16 Penn State Opens As 4.5-Point Favorite Over Minnesota

Fresh off its first loss of the season, No. 16 Penn State football has opened as a 4.5-point favorite over Minnesota, according to OddsShark. The game, which will serve as the Nittany Lions’ annual White Out matchup and Homecoming, has an over/under of 44.5 points.

Penn State is 3-3 this season against this spread after failing to cover three games in a row against Central Michigan, Northwestern, and Michigan, respectively. The former two games went under the points total, while the Michigan game went over thanks to the Wolverines’ offensive prowess.

The Nittany Lions are 4-5-1 against the spread in their last 10 games against the Golden Gophers. Additionally, in those 10 games, the over and under have each hit five times. Overall, Penn State is 5-5 against Minnesota in the last 10 games between the two programs

Minnesota is 4-2 against the spread this year and holds an 8-2 record against the spread in its last 10 road games. Furthermore, the Gophers are 10-4-1 against the spread in their last 15 games against conference opponents.

An interesting storyline to watch throughout the week that will almost certainly impact the betting line is the health of each team’s starting quarterback. Penn State signal-caller Sean Clifford exited Saturday’s game with an undisclosed injury, and his status for the White Out is unknown. Minnesota’s starter, Tanner Morgan, was carted off the field during the team’s previous game due to a head injury, but head coach PJ Fleck hasn’t ruled him out for the prime-time matchup.

The Nittany Lions and Golden Gophers will kick off at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 22, under the lights at Beaver Stadium. The game will air on ABC.
