SPA To Host ‘Together We Are’ Event October 24
Penn State’s Student Programming Association (SPA) will host a community event on Monday, October 24, the day controversial speakers are expected to speak on campus.
The event, “Together We Are,” will begin at 6 p.m. and end at 10 p.m. in Alumni Hall in the HUB.
The celebration will have music, performances, free food, and activities relating to various cultures, identities, and communities.
Additionally, there will be yoga led by Campus Recreation staff and tabling throughout the HUB.
“Honoring our Penn State values, we believe that the promotion of inclusion and belonging is critical. It is our hope with Together We Are that the promotion of these values are not solely for this event, but that it will serve as a stepping stone for any and all events hosted on the University Park campus,” SPA’s Director of Events Jessica Markovich said. “By having this event, our goal is to increase dialogue and create a safer space for Penn State students, faculty, and members alike.”
“Together We Are” is free to attend and funded by “dozens” of departments and colleges.
On Tuesday, Penn State leaders released a statement condemning the controversial Uncensored America event and explained that the registered student organization has the “undeniable constitutional right” to sponsor the presentation on campus.
In addition to SPA’s “Together We Are” event, Al Tompkins will also host a free hour-long lecture titled “Fighting Truth Decay: How and Why Fakers Fake” at 6 p.m. in the Freeman Auditorium. The Student Committee for Defense and Solidarity is hosting a student-led protest outside the Thomas Building at 6 p.m.
