Penn State men’s hockey’s Ben Schoen has been named the Big Ten First Star of the Week, as announced Tuesday morning.

Schoen tallied four points in Penn State’s sweep over Mercyhurst last week.

Schoen, a sophomore forward, scored one goal and two assists in Penn State’s 6-3 win in game one of the series on Thursday. Schoen’s goal gave the Nittany Lions a 2-1 lead in the second period.

Schoen also had an assist in the Nittany Lions’ 4-1 win the following night. So far, the Ohio native has one goal, five assists, and six points this season.

The young forward is joined by Notre Dame defenseman Drew Bavaro and Michigan goaltender Erik Portillo on the Big Ten’s three stars this week.

Schoen becomes the second Nittany Lion to earn one the conference’s three stars of the week this season. Forward Ryan Kirwan was named the Big Ten’s third star following solid performances against Canisius two weeks ago.

Penn State is scheduled for a two-game home series against St. Thomas this Thursday and Friday before heading to Wisconsin for its first Big Ten series on October 28 and 29. Game one of the series against St. Thomas is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 20.
