Penn State-Minnesota History By The Numbers
When No. 16 Penn State and Minnesota kick off under the lights on Saturday in the annual White Out game, it’ll be the 16th time the two teams go head to head.
The Nittany Lions boast a 9-6 all-time record over the Golden Gophers dating back to 1993. Penn State took down Minnesota 38-20 on September 4, 1993, at Beaver Stadium.
In the most recent matchup between the two squads in 2019, Minnesota upset No. 4 Penn State 31-26 in Minneapolis to hand the Nittany Lions their first loss of the season. The last matchup at Beaver Stadium occurred in 2016 when Penn State defeated the Gophers 29-26 in an overtime thriller.
The all-time series has been defined by four-game winning streaks.
Penn State started the all-time series against Minnesota with a four-game winning streak, outscoring the Gophers 137-55 during that stretch. However, Minnesota responded to the early Nittany Lion dominance with a four-game winning streak of its own beginning in 1999 in which it outscored Penn State 85-60 en route to evening up the all-time series 4-4.
Then, ironically enough, another four-game win streak ensued, this time for the Nittany Lions once again. From 2005 to 2010, Penn State went 4-0 against Minnesota and outscored it 125-62 during that span.
The Nittany Lions’ largest margin of victory over the Gophers came in a 56-3 win back in 1994. Their smallest margin of victory was a narrow 28-27 win in 2006.
Minnesota’s 24-10 win over Penn State in 2013 was its largest margin of victory, while its smallest margin of victory came in its 24-23 win in 1999.
Saturday’s game will be the eighth time the teams square off at Beaver Stadium. Through the first seven matchups, Penn State owns a 5-2 and has outscored Minnesota 184-119. Dating back to 2005, the Nittany Lions have won the last three games at Beaver Stadium.
The majority of the games between the two teams have taken place in October, with nine of the 15 kicking off in the month. October has treated Penn State well in the series, as the Nittany Lions have gone 7-2 against Minnesota during the month.
The game on Saturday will mark the first time Minnesota has been Penn State’s White Out opponent. To this point, the Nittany Lions have compiled a 7-6 record in full-stadium White Outs, with an additional 2-2 record in student-section White Outs.
Penn State is currently riding a two-game winning streak in White Out games after wins over Michigan and Auburn in 2019 and 2021, respectively (No White Out in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The program has never won three straight White Outs.
Since James Franklin has taken over the team, Penn State is 1-1 against Minnesota, with the Gophers narrowly outscoring the Nittany Lions 57-55 in those two games.
Overall, in the 15 games between the two conference foes, Penn State has outscored Minnesota 387-283.
