Penn State Ranked No. 38 In World Sustainability Rankings
In addition to claiming that their alma mater is one of the best in the world, Penn Staters can now say that Dear Old State is one of the most sustainable.
Penn State is ranked No. 38 in the world, No. 14 among all universities in the U.S., and sixth-best among all public universities in the country, according to the 2023 QS World University: Sustainability Rankings released on October 26.
The QS Rankings showcase how universities all over the globe are taking action to protect the environment and handle the world’s various social and governance issues. The rankings take into account “Environmental Impact” and “Social Impact,” where Penn State ranked No. 47 and No. 41, respectively.
Both categories also contain separate indicators, such as sustainable education, research, employment, and more. Penn State’s highest rankings among these indicators included No. 31 in “Sustainable Research” and No. 30 in “Knowledge Exchange.”
“This ranking reflects Penn State’s core strategies to improve sustainability across many global areas,” Lora Weiss, senior vice president for research, said in a release. “As a land-grant university, we take sustainability seriously at the local, national and global levels, and utilize our magnitude to bring long-lasting advancements to our communities. These passions are ingrained in Penn State’s mission from the top down, and we are proud of the recognition of our efforts.”
Penn State leads all other Big Ten schools, followed by Minnesota at No. 72, Michigan at No. 75, and Illinois at No. 84.
The QS Rankings Advisory Board consists of over 40 experts from 20 countries and works with Elsevier, the Academic Freedom Index, and Yale University to analyze data.
