[Photo Story] Penn State’s 2022 In Photos
Another year has come and gone at Penn State. 2022 was full of many highlights, including the return of notable events as COVID-19 restrictions loosened.
Before the ball drops, let’s take a look back at some of this year’s most memorable moments, captured by our visual staff.
January: Let It Snow
Another year, another snowstorm. Students took to numerous hills on Penn State’s campus, sliding down with items ranging from laundry baskets to HUB dining trays.
February: Welcome Back, THON
After THON 2021 was moved virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic, THON 2022 made a full in-person return. Although attendees were asked to wear masks, dancers, spectators, and volunteers alike reunited for the fabled 46 hours.

March: Wrestling Wins Big
In addition to five individual champions, Penn State wrestling captured the team NCAA wrestling championship in Detroit.
April: Movin’ On Up
Penn State’s annual Movin’ On festival returned after a two-year hiatus. Jack Harlow headlined the festival, while Aminé and Fitz and the Tantrums also performed.
May: Lion Shrine Loses An Ear
Many Penn Staters woke up on graduation weekend to find the Lion Shrine and other campus landmarks vandalized. Penn State alum Julia Cipparulo was charged.
June: State College Pride
In celebration of Pride month, State College recognized the LGBTQ+ community with a parade.
July: Arts Fest Returns
One of State College’s most beloved events, Arts Fest, made its triumphant return to the delight of students and residents alike.
August: Masks No More
The unofficial ‘ending’ of COVID-19 rules meant a few things. Students were no longer required to wear masks on campus and could gather in large groups again. This meant the return of a full-fledged and maskless Penn State fall involvement fair on the HUB Lawn.
September: Saturday Down South
For the first time ever, Penn State traveled to Jordan-Hare Stadium to take on the Auburn Tigers in a highly touted Big Ten-SEC matchup. The Nittany Lions won in blowout fashion.
October: Protests Against The Proud Boys
State College community members gathered to protest a lecture hosted by comedian Alex Stein and Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes. The lecture was canceled due to a threat of escalating violence.
November: Let It Snow (again)
Penn State saw its first significant snowfall in November, providing some gorgeous photo ops.
December: Smelling Roses
After what most folks thought would be an average season at best, Penn State football ended up smelling roses by the year’s end. Starting off 2023 with a Rose Bowl victory would be a great way to begin the new year.
