Ally Schlegel Drafted No. 23 Overall By Chicago Red Stars In NWSL Draft

The pink headband is heading to the pros, folks.

Ally Schlegel was selected No. 23 overall by the Chicago Red Stars in the second round of the 2023 NWSL Draft. She’ll join Penn State women’s soccer alums Alyssa Naeher and recently drafted Penelope Hocking on the team.

The four-year starter opted to redshirt her true freshman year, but appeared in and started nearly every game for her remaining years of eligibility. Schlegel was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2019 and led the conference with 33 points and 13 goals.

The following season, Schlegel earned Big Ten Forward of the Year honors and registered a similar 11 goals and six assists and, once again, led the Big Ten in goals scored.

The Parker, Colorado, native and team captain shined on the stat sheet in her redshirt senior year as she reached 100 career points. Schlegel unsurprisingly led the Big Ten in goals for the third season and scored the game-winning goal en route to the Nittany Lions’ ninth Big Ten Tournament Championship.

Now, the forward will head to the Windy City for her rookie 22-game regular season which will begin on Saturday, March 25.
