Penn State Women’s Hockey Claims Three Of Four CHA Player Of The Week Honors
No. 10 Penn State women’s hockey is in the midst of a dominant season and is currently on a six-game win streak. The Nittany Lions have remained unbeaten since their November 25 loss to No. 3 Minnesota in what has become their best statistical season ever.
This success has made the nation take notice, and with freshman skater Tessa Janecke on the HCA Rookie of the Year Watch List, Penn State is beginning to garner recognition on the ice as it marches toward the playoffs.
This week, Penn State claimed three of four spots in the College Hockey America Players of the Week list.
Leading the nation in goals with 23, the blue and white’s Kiara Zanon picked up her fourth Forward of the Week honor of the season. In the Nittany Lions’ most recent outing against Syracuse, Zanon netted two pucks for goals, one while shorthanded, and helped out on an assist for a total of three points in the series.
With a total of 45 points on the year and already shattering the program record for goals in a season, the junior captain has one more series to stack her tallies higher and solidify her dominant season in the record books.
Izzy Heminger was named the Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season. Acting as a quarterback from the blue line, Heminger found her weapons and delivered the puck consistently for two assists on the weekend.
Her efforts this season have broken the program record for assists by a defender with 16 on the campaign. A true two-way player though, Heminger also executed a lockdown defensive unit this weekend and shut out Syracuse for two games while she was on the ice.
Finally, continuing her award tour, freshman Tessa Janecke was named Rookie of the Week for the sixth time this year. Janecke buried a goal and picked up an assist in the series against the Orange, pushing her totals to 18 goals and 18 assists for a perfectly split 36 points in her freshman campaign.
She also dominated at the dot this weekend, winning 19 face-offs for the Nittany Lions, helping her squad choke their opponents off the puck for two commanding victories.
The Nittany Lions, already CHA season champs, have one more series against RIT to end their regular season. Moving forward, Penn State will enter the CHA playoffs for a chance to earn its first berth into the NCAA tournament in program history, and chances are high this season.
