Reports: Notre Dame Hires Micah Shrewsberry As Next Head Coach

Update, March 24: Micah Shrewsberry confirmed his departure from Penn State via Twitter Friday morning.

“I want to start out by thanking the entire Penn State community,” Shrewsberry said. “From the minute our family arrived in State College, you made this place feel like home.”

“Thank you to all of the players that I was lucky to coach here,” he continued. “The 2022 team laid a great foundation that allowed the 2023 team to reach unprecedented heights. It’s hard to put into words what this team has meant to me. Their competitiveness, toughness, and teamwork all showed through in our toughest moments.”

Shrewsberry thanked Sandy Barbour, Pat Kraft, Neeli Bendapudi, and the rest of the Penn State administration.

“To the fans who provided unrelenting support, we couldn’t have done any of this without you,” Shrewsberry said.

Interestingly, his Twitter replies were turned off.

Update, 8 p.m.: Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Pat Kraft released the following statement regarding the departure of Micah Shrewsberry:

“This afternoon, Penn State Head Men’s Basketball Coach Micah Shrewsberry called to inform me that he was leaving the University to accept a position at another institution,” Kraft said. “We thank Micah for his contributions and wish him the very best.”

“We are already moving forward in a search for a new head coach and will identify and appoint a tremendous coach, teacher and person, who will take us to unprecedented heights.”

“We are so proud of our amazingly talented student-athletes and all they accomplished this year and will in the future. We are also so appreciative of our student body and our passionate fans who support our basketball program.”

Original Story: The Micah Shrewsberry era of Penn State men’s basketball has reportedly come to an end. Notre Dame is hiring Shrewsberry as its next head coach, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Stadium’s Jeff Goodman.

CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander is reporting it’s a seven-year contract and that Notre Dame will officially announce the hiring on Friday.

Shrewsberry led the Nittany Lions to a 37-31 record over two seasons at the helm, leading them to an NCAA Tournament appearance in only his second season. He is also responsible for bringing in stars like Jalen Pickett and Andrew Funk via the transfer portal, which revolutionized the program’s play over the last two seasons.

The Fighting Irish have a storied history when it comes to college basketball, even though they have not lived up to expectations recently. Since the 2018-19 season, they have gone 80-78 with only one NCAA Tournament appearance in that span. They haven’t been ranked in that five-year period at any point throughout each season, either.

CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein previously reported that Penn State was prepared to make a significant offer to Shrewsberry and the Penn State basketball program, however, it seems like the offer wasn’t significant enough, or Shrewsberry had his intentions set on going closer to home.

It is unclear who, staff and players alike, Shrewsberry will bring with him to Notre Dame, should the hiring become official. However, those decisions will be coming in the near future as Penn State figures out its next steps.

The Nittany Lions will have had four coaches in the last five years when a new coach is announced, creating a sour reputation that continues to hover over the program.
