Notre Dame Hires Micah Shrewsberry As Next Head Coach

It’s official, folks.

Penn State men’s basketball head coach Micah Shrewsberry will head to South Bend, Indiana, to become Notre Dame’s 18th head coach in program history.

After nearly a week of rumored reports regarding Shrewsberry’s departure, Notre Dame officially announced the hiring Friday morning.

“During our two month process, we weekly reviewed our candidate pool and each week he (Micah) stayed at the top of our list due to his fit at the University and his commitment to the student-athlete experience,” Vice President and James E. Rohr Notre Dame Director of Athletics Jack Swarbrick said in a release. “Not only do his personal & family values align with the University, but his dedication to the development of each member of his program as well.”

Shrewsberry arrived in Happy Valley with plenty of college basketball experience under his belt but lacked a previous head coaching gig. Former Penn State Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Sandy Barbour hired Shrewsberry in March 2021, and the coach led the Nittany Lions to a combined 37-31 record across two seasons.

A former assistant at Purdue, Butler, and the Boston Celtics, Shrewsberry’s knowledge of the game ran deep. After an initial building year, the second-year head coach led Penn State to a .500 conference-win record and an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Previously, the Nittany Lions hadn’t received an NCAA Tournament bid in 12 years, nor a first-round win in 22 years.

Shrewsberry will head a Fighting Irish team chock-full of history that yields an 80-78 record over the last five years. Amongst players and staff, it’s unknown who Shrewsberry will take with him to South Bend at this point.

“I’m very excited to be joining the University of Notre Dame family,” Shrewsberry said. “The combination of top notch academics, plus a long storied history of success on the basketball court, made this a very attractive job for me. The power of the Notre Dame brand, and the passionate alumni family, will allow us to recruit the brightest student-athletes from coast to coast. I can’t wait to get to campus and begin connecting with the students, faculty and staff which make this place special.”
