Where Do Nittany Lions Fall In Final 2023 NFL Mock Drafts?

The 2023 NFL Draft is officially upon us, folks.

The Nittany Lions have a plethora of players hoping to hear their names called over the three-day, seven-round NFL Draft. Penn State has players spaced out all over mock draft boards from multiple different analysts.

With the draft set to get underway tonight, let’s see where draft analysts across the industry are predicting Penn Staters to fall.

Charles Davis (NFL.com)

In Davis’ Mock Draft 3.0, former Penn State transfer Will Levis stays on the board until the 12th pick, which is held by the Houston Texans. Davis has Levis as the fourth quarterback off the board, with the Texans using the No. 2 overall pick in the first round to take Will Anderson Jr. instead of Levis, leaving the quarterback up for grabs until the middle of the first round.

Davis also believes that the Pittsburgh Steelers will continue the Porter dynasty in Pittsburgh and draft Porter No. 17 overall to provide young legs to the Steelers’ secondary.

Danny Kelly (The Ringer)

Danny Kelly also believes that Levis will stay on the board through the first 10 picks of his mock draft, sharing Davis’ sentiment that the Texans will use their No. 2 overall pick to snag an edge rusher instead of a quarterback. However, Kelly also has Levis sticking around long enough for the Texans to pick him up with the No. 12 pick later on in the round.

Kelly predicts Porter will take his ” incredible length and instincts” to the Eagles’ secondary after they use the No. 30 overall pick to take him in the first round.

Pete Prisco (CBS Sports)

Pete Prisco released his “What Teams ‘Should’ Do” mock draft on Wednesday and has Will Levis going as the No. 1 overall pick to the Carolina Panthers.

Prisco has Porter, who he says has “good size and excels in man coverage,” staying on the board for a little longer than other experts. Prisco predicts Porter will be the fourth cornerback taken in the draft, heading to the Cincinnati Bengals with the No. 28 overall pick.

Porter and Levis are the only two Nittany Lions to be featured in the one-round mock draft from Prisco.

All Analyst Seven-Round Mock Draft (Pro Football Focus)

All 19 of PFF’s football analysts contributed to its final seven-round mock draft, which features the same two Penn State names being drafted in the first round.

In a break from popular opinion, PFF has Levis being drafted by the Indianapolis Colts with the No. 4 overall pick while Houston, the favorite for Levis, will use its pick on former Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson.

Experts at PFF believe that the Colts would much rather take a chance on Levis than have Gardner Minshew as their starter for the upcoming season.

PFF also has Joey Porter Jr. climbing to his highest predicted draft position, being taken at No. 14 overall by the New England Patriots due to his familiarity with the press man defensive scheme, which Porter specializes in.

Penn Staters are notably absent from rounds two and three of the mock draft, with the next Penn Stater coming off the board being center Juice Scruggs drafted by the Texans with the No. 104 overall pick.

Analysts believe that Scruggs will develop well into a starting role in the future due to his athleticism, strength, and ability to anchor himself on the field.

Later on in the fourth round, PFF suspects that safety Ji’Ayir Brown will take his talents to the New Orleans Saints as the No. 115 overall pick in the draft.

Parker Washington is expected to be a late-round steal in the latest mock draft, going No. 149 overall to the Green Bay Packers. Washington is described as a wide receiver in a running back’s body that will bring production to any team that drafts him.

The PFF mock draft only has five Penn Staters being picked in this year’s draft.

Chad Reuter (NFL.com)

NFL.com’s Chad Reuter has seven Nittany Lions being taken in his mock draft, including Levis.

Reuter suspects Levis will get taken with the No. 2 overall pick to the Texans to revitalize their broken quarterback room.

Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. is also slated to go in the first round of Reuter’s mock draft, being taken by the Commanders with the No. 16 overall pick. Reuter believes that Porter is a good fit for Ron Rivera’s defense and will be asked to play a large role in the run-stopping defense along with the pass rush.

The rest of Penn State’s 2023 draft class is spread out among the later rounds of the mock draft, with Ji’Ayir Brown and Parker Washington being drafted just eight picks apart in the third round at No. 85 and No. 93 overall by the Los Angeles Chargers and Carolina Panthers, respectively.

After the two selections in the third round, Reuter has Brenton Strange joining Nittany Lion Mike Gesicki in the New England Patriots tight end room in the fourth round with the No. 107 overall pick.

From there, Penn State center Juice Scruggs is slated to go in the sixth round with the No. 214 overall pick by the Las Vegas Raiders before Sean Clifford becomes the last Nittany Lion to appear in Reuter’s mock draft.

Reuter has Clifford, a talent many scouts graded as an undrafted free agent, being selected by the New York Giants in the last round with the No. 240 pick, setting the stage for a late-round Cinderella story if Clifford can manage to make a name for himself in the NFL.
