Ji’Ayir Brown Drafted No. 87 Overall By San Francisco 49ers

Ji’Ayir Brown is officially off the board in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The former Penn State safety was taken by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round with the No. 87 overall pick in 2023 NFL Draft.

Brown is the second safety to come out of Penn State in as many years, as Jaquan Brisker was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the second round last year. Brown is the fourth Nittany Lion off the board this year, joining Joey Porter Jr., Brenton Strange, and Juice Scruggs.

After transferring from Lackawanna Community College, Brown began his Penn State career during the 2020 season. He appeared in nine games and made six total tackles. The safety then started to come into his own during the 2021 season, as he started all 13 games at safety. He was tied for the nation’s lead with six interceptions and was named a third-team All-Big Ten honoree by coaches.

His 2022 season with the Nittany Lions was even better, being named Penn State’s team MVP and was voted a team captain. The Trenton, New Jersey, native finished the season with 74 total tackles, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and four interceptions. He capped off his Penn State career by being named the 2023 Rose Bowl defensive MVP. He was also named a Pro Football Focus third-team All-Big Ten honoree.

In total, Brown finished his outstanding Penn State career with 122 total tackles, nine tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks, and 10 interceptions.

Brown’s ability to consistently make impact plays across the field, especially in crucial moments, could certainly be an asset for him as his NFL career begins. He’ll join a 49ers team that went 13-4 last year and made it all the way to the NFC Championship game.
