Sam Sessoms Joins Penn State Hoops Alumni ‘The Basketball Tournament’ Team

Former Penn State men’s basketball player Sam Sessoms announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions’ “The Basketball Tournament” alumni team, Happy Valley Hoopers, on Wednesday.

Sessoms played for Penn State for two seasons in the middle of time at Binghamton and Coppin State throughout his five-year college basketball career. The 6’0″, Philadelphian guard contributed under former head coaches Jim Ferry and Micah Shrewsberry from 2020 to 2022.

Sessoms is coming off of his final year of eligibility at Coppin State where he started and appeared in 32 games and averaged 20.5 points, five assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game. The guard recorded a season-high 37 points in February and helped led the Bald Eagles to a 9-23 record.

At Penn State, Sessoms transferred into the program in the 2020-21 season, amid several coaching staff changes and heavy roster turnover. However, the junior proved to be a force off the bench and was the only Nittany Lion to score in double figures in the first seven games of the season.

The following season, Sessoms chose to stay in Happy Valley among the likes of Myles Dread, John Harrar, and Seth Lundy under first-year head coach Shrewsberry. He made 10 starts and led Penn State with a 42% three-point conversion percentage. The senior was instrumental in the Nittany Lions’ Big Ten Tournament run in the 2021-22 season.

Now, Sessoms will join fellow Penn State alumni Dread, Tony Carr, Josh Reaves, Shep Garner, Mike Watkins, Jamari Wheeler, Trent Buttrick, and more. Harrar created the team in January and the Nittany Lion alumni group will compete for $1,000,000 in the NCAA Tournament-style summer tournament in July.
